Homemade Dairy Free Whipped Cream Recipe That Actually Works
I tried several homemade dairy free whipped cream recipes so that you don’t have to!
And nearly all of them failed. Some never thickened, while others looked promising at first but melted into a puddle almost immediately.
After plenty of experimenting and several disappointing attempts, I finally discovered a dairy free whipped cream recipe that actually works.
It becomes wonderfully smooth and fluffy, holds its shape, and doesn’t disappear the moment you spoon it onto something.
Mine stayed fresh and fluffy for seven days when stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
The kids loved adding it to their pancakes in the morning, and I may have added a generous spoonful to my coffee for a fun little treat.
It would also be delicious with fresh berries, hot cocoa, pies, cakes, waffles, or just about any dessert that could use an extra creamy finishing touch.
What I love most about this homemade dairy free whipped cream is how easy it is to make.
You only need three simple ingredients, and the entire recipe comes together in just a few minutes.
The finished whipped cream is light, smooth, and wonderfully creamy!

Dairy Free Whipped Cream Ingredients
- 1 cup dairy free heavy whipping cream, thoroughly chilled
I used This dairy free heavy cream from Amazon and it actually worked! - 2 to 5 tablespoons organic powdered sugar, depending on the consistency you like it
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
How to Make Dairy Free Whipped Cream
Step 1: Chill Your Ingredients and Mixing Tools
Before you begin, make sure the dairy free heavy cream is completely cold. For the best results, place your mixing bowl and whisk attachment or hand mixer beaters in the refrigerator for about 10 to 15 minutes.
Keeping everything cold helps the cream whip more quickly and makes it much easier for it to hold its shape.
I also like to make sure the heavy cream is cold and for best results has been in the fridge overnight.
Step 2: Begin Whipping the Cream
Pour the chilled dairy free heavy cream into the cold mixing bowl. Begin mixing on low speed for about 30 seconds to prevent splattering.
Step 3: Add the Powdered Sugar and Vanilla
Slowly add the powdered sugar, one tablespoon at a time. Add the vanilla extract and continue whipping.
Adding the sugar gradually helps it blend smoothly into the cream without leaving behind any small lumps.
Gradually increase the mixer to medium high speed. Continue whipping until the cream begins to thicken.
Step 4: Whip Until Fluffy
Continue whipping the mixture on medium-high speed until it becomes light and fluffy and forms medium to stiff peaks. This will usually take a few minutes.
You’ll know it is ready when you lift the whisk and the whipped cream holds its shape instead of immediately falling back into the bowl.
Be careful not to continue mixing for too long. Once the whipped cream is fluffy and holding its shape, stop the mixer so the texture stays smooth and creamy.
Step 5: Serve or Refrigerate
Use the whipped cream immediately, or transfer it to an airtight container and place it in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve it.
My batch stayed fluffy and tasted wonderful for up to seven days in the refrigerator.
Storage time may vary depending on several factors. If you don't end up eating it all right away, you'll know when to discard it if the texture, smell, or flavor changes.
Bonus Tips for Making the Best Dairy Free Whipped Cream
The most important part of this recipe is keeping everything cold. Do not leave the dairy free cream sitting on the counter before whipping it.
A cold bowl, cold beaters, and cold cream will give you the best chance of creating a thick and stable whipped cream.
Powdered sugar works best because it dissolves quickly and helps give the whipped cream a smoother texture. Start with a table spoon at a time and add more if you need the consistency to be thicker or if you would like it to be sweeter.
Different dairy-free heavy cream brands will whip differently, so choose one specifically labeled for whipping rather than a regular coffee creamer or plant based milk.
