Unicorn Chocolate Covered Oreos Using A Silicon Mold
For my little ones third birthday party, we made these adorable and delicious unicorn chocolate covered Oreos to match her unicorn theme!
These cute treats were not only fun and easy to make but also incredibly tasty. With just a few ingredients and a little time, you can create your very own unicorn chocolate covered Oreos!
A little back story on how these came into fruition. My little one's wish was to have a unicorn themed birthday party. She absolutely loves all things unicorns and pink! I did my best to incorporate different elements throughout the party treats to make that whimsical unicorn vibe come to life. Decorating Oreo cookies is easy, fun and simply adds that extra magic to any parties theme!
The best part is, you don't have to bake anything or be a professional decorator to make these! All you need are a few simple supplies & a little bit of time!
What I love about these cookies is how fun and cute they look when they are finished. Making them is so simple but the outcome is so festive. Oreos are such a classic cookie, and decorating them for any party is a must!
If you shop at home goods, you know how you can find some really cute gems from time to time. Unfortunately I can't link to these since they only sell in store. But I am sure you can find something special to display your cookies on!
With a few supplies and a little creativity, you'll be on your way to making your very own unicorn chocolate covered Oreos in no time!
To make the Unicorn Chocolate Covered Oreos, here are the supplies you will need
Supplies needed:
- Trader Joe's Joe-Joe's or any Oreo style cookies ( we also used GF Oreos and just used blue gel in the chocolate to decorate them. This way we knew which ones were which by the colors)
- Silicone molds (I used a disc or round shape mold and a heart shaped mold)
- White chocolate or melting wafers
- Food coloring
- Coconut oil
- Edible decorations (glitter, premade unicorn horns, icing cake decorations etc.)
Ps. Supply list will be linked at the bottom of this post
Tips:
- Choose a white chocolate you enjoy eating, as it will be the main coating
- Gel food coloring allows for better color control; use 1-2 drops for pastel shades and 2+ for more vibrant colors. only add 1 drop at a time and stir completely to see the vibrancy of each new shade
- Coconut oil helps make the chocolate more liquid and malleable
- Unicorn edible cake decorations can be found at various stores or online
PS. I will link the complete list of supplies at the very bottom of this post.
1. Melt the chocolate and prepare the colors
- Start by laying out parchment paper on a baking sheet. This will be your workspace for dipping and decorating the Oreos.
- Melt the white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat it in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth. You can add a tablespoon of coconut oil to the chocolate to help it smooth out.
- Divide the melted chocolate into three bowls. Add a different food color to each bowl and mix well. ( I had a bowl for pink, purple, and blue chocolate)
2. Fill The Chocolate Mold
- Start by piping, spooning or brushing the chocolate into the mold. You can use a spoon or silicon brush to spread a layer of chocolate evenly onto the lining of the mold
- Make sure to cover the entire mold walls with a layer of chocolate ( you can use your silicon brushes here if needed)
- Once the chocolate is evenly coated, place the mold in the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes
3. Fill the mold with Oreos & more chocolate
- After your first chocolate layer is frozen, take it out of the freezer. You can now place the Oreo cookies inside the mold
- Use more melted chocolate to fill around and onto the Oreo cookies. Make sure to fill the molds completely
- Gently tap the mold tray onto a tabletop after filling all the cavities. This will help to remove any air bubbles by leveling out the chocolate
- Put the mold back into the freezer for another 5-10 minutes. Let the Oreos cool completely before decorating
- To get the height, I filled each mold with 2 Oreos. Depending on the size of the silicon mold, you can adjust how many cookies you use for each treat. I also used a lot less melted chocolate to fill each mold using two cookies instead of just one
Time to decorate your chocolate covered Oreos
- Make sure your chocolate Oreos have set before removing them from the silicon mold
- Gently remove the chocolate Oreos from your silicone tray. Place them onto your baking sheet or parchment paper to decorate. (If the chocolate has cooled properly, it should be easy to remove)
- Time for the fun part! Decorating the chocolate Oreos!
- If you purchased sprinkles or hard icing decorations, melt some more chocolate (make sure it's the same color you used to make your chocolate Oreos) You can use the melted chocolate as glue to stick your decorations to your chocolate covered Oreos
- For the gold color, I used 24K edible gold flakes. These really popped against the purple and made each treat feel more magical and vibey
- I used premade edible icing cupcake toppers to place on top of these cookies. To get them to stick, I used the melted chocolate to "glue" it all together.
- Once you are finished decorating, place these back into the fridge or freezer to cool and harden until you are ready to use
Get creative with your designs. Each Oreo can be a different unicorn character or design. No two will be exactly alike. Let your imagination run wild!
What is the easiest way to melt chocolate for coating Oreos?
You can melt chocolate in the microwave. Place chopped chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 15-30-second bursts, stirring between each interval. Stop when most of the chocolate is melted and stir until smooth.
How long do chocolate-covered Oreos last?
Properly stored, chocolate-covered Oreos in the fridge, they can stay fresh for up to 3 weeks. For longer storage, you can freeze them for up to 2 months.
Keep in mind that the texture may change slightly over time. The cookie might soften a bit, but they'll still taste delicious.
