Mermaid Themed Birthday Party

This year we celebrated our daughter’s fourth birthday in the most magical way. 

She has always loved mermaids and hanging out at the beach, so we decided to bring the sea to our backyard with a pink, purple, and blue mermaid birthday party theme. 

From the moment she woke up on her birthday, she was so excited to see everything come together, (which we spent all night secretly setting up) and it felt incredibly special to create a little ocean world just for her.

Mermaid Dessert Table

The dessert table was a dream of soft colors and whimsical mermaid details.

We kept everything gluten free so that everyone could enjoy the treats together.

There were homemade chocolate cupcakes topped with my house made organic blue spirulina frosting, mermaid marbled chocolate covered Oreos, and delicate macarons. 

One of the highlights were the mermaid cakesicles, made with coconut oil white chocolate and decorated with fondant mermaid tails. 

Everything was homemade (except for the cake) which I spent the entire week baking and making. It was definetly worth it in the end, but if you dont have the time to make a full spread, check out this Etsy shop which you can order similar special treats. 

We also dipped buttery Madeline cookies into spirulina chocolate, and decorated with colorful mermaid theme sprinkles. These looked just like seashells and felt perfectly suited for the theme.

A couple big bowls of fresh fruit salad brought a refreshing touch alongside the sweets.

Mermaid Birthday Party Food

For savory bites, we served our “famous” homemade pizza along with an almond flour GF version, a pine nut arugula salad, and a cheese and veggie board.

Everything was simple but thoughtful, and perfect for both kids and adults to enjoy. 

Mermaid Party Drinks

To sip, we had apple juice and sparkling water for the little ones, while the grownups enjoyed rosé bubbles, pinot noir, and a variety of locally brewed kombucha teas.

Mermaid Birthday Cake

No birthday is complete without a special cake, and this one felt straight out of a fairytale.

The cake was layered in shades of pink, purple, and blue to echo the colors of the sea, with fondant mermaid tails rising playfully from the top.

Ocean inspired decorations like seashells, starfish, and soft swirls of seafoam completed the design.

It was every bit as enchanting as our daughter had hoped for and quickly became the centerpiece of the celebration. 

We ordered the cake from Sprinkles Of Joy in Newburg Oregon. We actually order all of our event cakes from here! She always does a lovely job with the cakes and if you are in Oregon, I highly recommend checking them out. 

Mermaid Birthday Party Activities

The children had no shortage of fun with a mix of playful and creative activities.

We offered both large and small motor skill activities for the kids. 

A pink bouncy house kept them entertained for hours and hours, while a kiddy water slide and small heated mini pool brought the ocean magic to life. 

The pool in particular became such a sweet little gathering place where the children relaxed and splashed around together.

A light up bubble machine and gentle music made the party extra fun and festive! I made sure to order a ton of extra bubbles so we didn't run out for the duration of the party. 

For something more hands on, we created a mermaid craft station.

We set out wands, crowns, vintage paddle ball toys, and wooden keychains, along with thousands of sparkling jewel stickers.

The kids decorated their treasures and this kept them entertained for the longest time.

It was so much fun watching their imaginations come alive. I provided acrylic paint markers too, but in hindsight, washable markers may be the easier choice if you do not plan to supervise closely.

One of my favorite moments was gathering everyone around the birthday cake table to sing happy birthday.

Each child had their own little spot at the table, and together they enjoyed slices of cake before heading back outside to continue bouncing, swimming, and crafting.

The day felt joyful, lighthearted, and full of laughter.

It was such a gift to see our daughter so happy surrounded by her friends and family, celebrating in a way that was perfectly her.

Turning four feels like a milestone, and I am so grateful we were able to create a party that reflected her love for mermaids and the ocean.

It was a day I will always treasure, and one that I hope she will remember as a truly magical birthday.
